Chapter 01

What Does Shore A Really Mean?

Shore A is the international standard for measuring the hardness of soft, rubber-like materials -- including silicone. A durometer presses a calibrated needle into the surface; the resistance determines the reading.

A
Scale Range: 0-100 Higher numbers indicate harder, more rigid silicone.
B
Common Pet Product Range Most pet silicone sits between 30A (ultra-soft) and 70A (structural).
C
Tested per ASTM D2240 Readings taken on 6mm+ thickness with calibrated durometer.

Chapter 02 · Tactile Reference

How Different Hardness Levels Actually Feel

20A

Jelly-Soft

Compresses easily with a fingertip. Memory-foam-like squish.

Like: Gummy Bear
40A

Pillow-Soft

Pliable with gentle resistance. Comfortable for sustained contact.

Like: Pencil Eraser
60A

Firm Rubber

Light compression under thumb pressure. Strong rebound.

Like: Tire Tread
80A

Hard & Structural

Minimal deformation. Approaches plastic-like rigidity.

Like: Shoe Heel

Chapter 03

Hardness & Product Support

The hardness you choose directly determines whether your product can hold its shape, support weight, and maintain function under load. Softer silicone collapses; harder silicone sustains.

20-30A
Low Support
Collapsible, non-load-bearing

Ideal for foldable bowls, sleeves, decorative covers. Will not hold water column weight when thin.

40-50A
Balanced
Moderate structural retention

Travel water bowls, slow feeder mats. Holds shape under liquid load but still flexible for packing.

60-70A
High Support
Load-bearing & dimensionally stable

Chew toys, grooming brush handles, structural rings. Resists compression under bite force.

Chapter 04

Hardness & Rebound Energy

Rebound describes how quickly silicone returns to its original form after deformation. It's the hidden property that makes a chew toy "satisfying" or a bowl rim "springy."

Low Hardness

Slow Recovery

~55%

20-30A silicone absorbs energy and returns slowly. Produces a dampened, pillowy response.

Mid Hardness

Balanced Rebound

~70%

40-50A offers the optimal "snap" for interactive toys and feeders -- energetic but not fatiguing.

High Hardness

High Elasticity

~85%

60-70A delivers sharp, immediate rebound. Preferred for treat-dispenser balls and durable toys.

Chapter 05

Hardness & Wall Thickness

Thickness and hardness work together. A thin wall of 70A silicone may feel softer than a thick section of 40A. Our engineers balance both to meet your tactile target.

Hardness
Min Wall Thickness
Behavior Note
20-30A
1.5 mm
Tears under thin sections
40-50A
1.0 mm
Optimal flow in molding
60-70A
0.8 mm
Risk of brittleness if too thin
70-80A
0.6 mm
Near-plastic rigidity

Chapter 06 · Application Matrix

Recommended Hardness by Pet Product

Field-proven hardness ranges from 15 years of OEM production across 500+ SKUs.

Foldable silicone pet bowl

Foldable Bowls

40 - 50A

Flexible enough to collapse; firm enough to hold water without sagging rims.

Slow feeder silicone mat

Slow Feeder Mats

30 - 45A

Soft nubs cushion gums while providing enough resistance to slow eating.

Silicone chew toy for dogs

Chew Toys

60 - 75A

Resists tearing under bite force; maintains shape through aggressive play.

Silicone grooming brush

Grooming Brushes

35 - 55A

Bristle softness varies by coat type; handle base uses 60A+ for grip.

Pet travel water bottle

Travel Water Bottles

50 - 65A

Rigid body with soft silicone bowl flap. Prevents collapse under grip pressure.

Silicone treat dispensing toy

Treat Dispensers

55 - 70A

Bouncy rebound keeps engagement high; tough enough to resist chew-through.

70A

Chapter 07

Multi-Hardness Co-Molded Design

Many premium pet products combine 2-3 hardness zones in a single part -- soft gum-contact surfaces bonded to a rigid structural core. We specialize in dual-shot and overmolding workflows.

  • Chemical bonding between hardness zones -- no delamination
  • Silicone + plastic/PP/metal composite assemblies supported
  • Precision mold design with ±0.1mm dimensional tolerance

Chapter 08 · Validation Process

Hardness Swatches & Prototype Verification

Numbers on a datasheet rarely match tactile expectation. We send physical hardness swatches and functional prototypes to confirm your choice before mass tooling.

1

Swatch Kit

Physical samples from 20A to 80A shipped for in-hand evaluation.

2

3D Printed Mockup

SLA/SLS prototypes to validate form, before soft tooling investment.

3

Soft Tool Sample

Low-cavity aluminum tool produces 50-200 real silicone samples.

4

Lab Verification

Durometer, tensile, tear and aging tests confirm spec compliance.

Chapter 09

Common Hardness Selection Mistakes

Avoid these pitfalls that cost brands months of retooling.

01

"Softer is always safer for pets"

Not true for chewable products. Silicone below 40A tears easily under aggressive bite force, creating choking hazards. Chew-rated products require 60A+ for safety.
02

"Hardness is independent of thickness"

Perceived hardness is a function of both material durometer and wall thickness. A 70A thin wall will feel softer than a 40A thick block. Design holistically.
03

"Shore A rating never drifts"

±3 Shore A tolerance is industry standard. Variations in curing time, temperature, and raw-material batch can shift hardness. Our QC catches drift beyond spec.
04

"Harder silicone is more durable"

Hardness and tear strength are not equivalent. Above 75A, silicone becomes brittle and crack-prone. Mid-range (50-65A) often delivers the best lifecycle performance.
05

"Pick hardness after mold is built"

Hardness affects shrinkage (0.3%-1.2% variance). Changing hardness after mold build can cause dimensional failure. Lock hardness before tooling kickoff.
